The Ansel Adams Inaugural Exhibition: California, recently featured at a local arts center, offered a unique opportunity to Dr. Brenda Betts and her students in the Multiple Subjects Credential Program in the Department of Teacher Education at California State University (CSU), Stanislaus.
The project, envisioned by Associate Dean Kathy Shipley, was to create a curriculum unit for teachers to accompany the recent exhibit of the life’s work of Adams, California’s most renowned photographer, at the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock.
“The purpose of this curriculum unit is to provide fourth-grade teachers and students with interesting and informative lesson plans, so students can learn more about Ansel Adams and the subjects he photographed during his remarkable career,” said Shipley. “He was concerned about many important topics during his lifetime that are still relevant today.”
Dr. Betts’s students responded with a curriculum unit that includes 34 lesson plans, free for anyone to download. “The History-Social Science Standards for the fourth grade focus on California History, so the lesson plans are most relevant for that level,” said Betts.
“The unit is divided into eight sections: California, Yosemite, WWII Japanese-American Internment, Water, Farming, Conservation, Geology and Memorabilia.”
In addition to grade-appropriate, interactive and hands-on lessons, the curriculum unit includes many excellent resources for teachers and students. There are activity sheets, graphic organizers, charts, PowerPoint slide shows, recommended books and websites for each section of the unit.
The lesson plans have been designed for the Fourth Grade History-Social Science Standards, the Visual and Performing Arts Standards and the English Language Development Standards. Some of the lesson plans include additional subject areas.
The free lesson plans are on Dr. Betts’ website at www.csustan.edu/TeacherEd/BrendaBetts.html. For more information regarding the curriculum unit and lesson plans, contact Brenda Betts, Ph.D., Department of Teacher Education at (209) 667-3793.
