California State University, Stanislaus student Cristina Barron of Escalon is one of 25 college interns from the Leon & Sylvia Panetta Institute for Public Policy serving in offices of the California Congressional delegation in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C.

Barron, a junior majoring in Political Science and a 2003 graduate of Grace Davis High School in Modesto, is serving her all expenses paid internship during the fall semester in the offices of Congressman Dennis Cardoza (D-Merced).

Students for the eighth annual program were selected by the presidents of the California State University system for their exemplary scholastic achievements as well as their interest in politics. The Congressional Internship Program was founded by Leon and Sylvia Panetta to give students a hands-on experience as to how democracy works in the U.S.

“Part of the learning experience for many California State University, Stanislaus students is to participate in programs that give them on-the-job experience,” said CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani. “Cristina Barron is a high achiever and will distinguish herself in a congressional office while experiencing the legislative process first-hand.”

Students, who are paid a stipend during the program, received an intensive two-week training course at the Panetta Institute in Monterey before starting their work in the congressional offices.

Barron, who is considering doing post-graduate work at a law school after earning her degree at CSU Stanislaus, is described as an extremely bright student by her faculty advisor Dr. Stephen Routh of the Politics and Public Administration Department.

“Cristina is learning first-hand about how politics work in Washington, D.C., and gaining invaluable experience as a member of the congressional staff,” Routh said.

The Congressional Internship Program is just one of several programs available to CSU Stanislaus students and graduates interested in public policy and politics. Other distinguished programs include the Fellowship programs administered by the Center for California Studies at CSU Sacramento which places select college graduates in Senate, Assembly, Executive, and Judicial offices through California’s Capitol City. This year, CSU Stanislaus graduate Sulma Guzman was selected to participate in the Executive Fellowship Program and will be placed in an office or agency within Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s administration.
