As You Like It, one of Shakespeare's most enduring plays, is a pastoral romance celebrating the "simple life" of the country and the presence of love, everywhere. Banishment has sent two loving, royal cousins, Rosalind and Celia, into the magical forest of Arden where shepherds and shepherdesses live the simple country life caring for their animals and penning sonnets to their hearts' true loves. It is also here, amid the hypnotic fragrance of the woods, that exiled lords ponder their imprint on the natural world. Often called a "green" play, it relates to the need in all of us to rejuvenate the country, to leave the hustle and bustle of the city, and to regenerate and observe natural beauty, always with a sense of conserving it for future generations.

The play also gives us some of Shakespeare's most famous characters. Rosalind is confident and discerning who, disguised as a boy, tests Orlando, the man she loves, and tries the conviction of his ardor. She travels with Touchstone, one of the great Shakespearian clowns, who jocundly casts his pronouncements on all. In the forest, the melancholy lord Jacques imparts to his fellow exiles the famous "All the world's a stage" speech. Having been banished from the city by his brother, the "good" Duke Senior and his men worry that they have usurped the forest from its denizens as their lands were usurped. City versus nature, love and redemption are the core of As You Like It.

And for Shakespeare, even the "evil" Duke Frederick is redeemed. The story of youth and rebirth endures. It continues to charm. We are drawn by the lyrical delights into a world of fantasy and hope.
