The University also advanced to 43rd overall in the top tier for the West region in the "Best Universities-Master's" category which rates 116 private and public institutions in the magazine's 2008 edition. The U.S. News & World Report's national rankings represent a comprehensive look at how schools stack up based on indicators of excellence gathered from more than 1,400 colleges and universities.

The report, released in the national magazine's annual "America's Best Colleges" publication which goes on sale August 20, is popular with students and their parents who are sizing up prospective colleges and universities. The exclusive rankings are also available online at www.usnews.com/colleges, starting today (August 17).

CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani said the top ranking is recognition of an outstanding faculty and staff and their commitment to providing excellent higher education opportunities for a diverse group of students from all over the world.

"California State University, Stanislaus continues to be a leader in providing educational quality and access to a diverse population of learners, many of whom are first-generation students," President Shirvani said. "Our rating is a confirmation of the many opportunities available at CSU Stanislaus for academic excellence and student success, making it one of the best universities in the country."

CSU Stanislaus rated strongly for its high freshman retention and graduation rates, relatively small class sizes, and high percentage of full-time faculty.
