California Governor Jerry Brown (podium), CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed (far left), CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani (second from right) and other CSU campus presidents participate in a news media availability to discuss the 2011-12 budget.
California State University (CSU), Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani joined CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed in a special midday meeting with California Governor Jerry Brown to discuss the dire consequences of increasing the total CSU fiscal year 2011-12 budget reduction from $500 million to $1 billion. (Governor Brown has indicated the increase will occur if proposed tax extensions in his 2011 -12 state budget fail). Following the conversation, President Shirvani relayed this statement:

“The CSU strongly advocated against a $1 billion (36 percent) year-to-year budget reduction that could create significant hardship for students, families and campuses across the state. I am encouraged by the open dialog with the governor, as it is absolutely imperative that we protect higher education from damagingly high budget cuts and Central Valley students and their families from huge tuition increases and the prospect of significant limits on enrollment.”

President Shirvani will meet one-on-one with Central Valley legislators this afternoon.

The CSU Board of Trustees could be forced to raise tuition fees up to 32 percent—on top of an approved 10 percent increase for Fall 2011—and limit enrollment by 20,000 students statewide to deal with a $1 billion dollar budget cut.
