California State University, Stanislaus welcomed another record freshman class as enrollment for the current fall semester rose above 8,800 students for the first time.
Final official enrollment data for the fall 2007 semester shows CSU Stanislaus numbers increased 5.5 percent to another record high of 8,836 students, including a 5.8 percent jump to a new mark of 6,640 "full-time equivalent" students who are taking full class loads. A nine percent increase to 1,100 students at the University's Stockton Center contributed to the record-setting numbers.
As the University puts the finishing touches on the newly opened state-of-the-art Naraghi Hall of Science as a drawing card for new students, it is evident that graduating high school students are increasingly choosing CSU Stanislaus. Freshmen enrollment has climbed dramatically by 69 percent over the past seven years.
"California State University, Stanislaus is providing a top quality higher education experience that is appealing to more and more students in the Central Valley," CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani said. "Our successes at providing focused attention on individual students through small classes, one-on-one relationships with faculty, and effective student support services are drawing national recognition."
Of the freshman class that has grown by another 4.5 percent this year, a majority come from Stanislaus (426), Merced (197), and San Joaquin (152) counties. New freshmen students from Merced County are up 24 percent over the previous year.
The University's Early College program which offers college classes at the high school level has expanded to seven schools with an enrollment of 160 students, helping to promote awareness of CSU Stanislaus.
In addition to a 5 percent increase in freshmen students to nearly 1,000 (988), the University continued to attract close to another 1,000 new transfer students, with additional numbers expected to enroll from the community college ranks in the spring 2008 semester. A majority of the University's new transfer students come from regional community colleges - Modesto (333), Merced (161), San Joaquin Delta (150), and Columbia (23). Merced College transfer numbers are up 12 percent.
While a substantial number of new students are stated "undecided" for their majors, the most popular programs for declared major students were Business Administration, Liberal Studies, Nursing, Biological Sciences, Criminal Justice, and Psychology.
