The College of the Arts’ Department of Theatre at California State University, Stanislaus is proud to present William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet under the direction of Chicago-based guest artist Daniel Gately.
A long, hot summer in Verona enflames the old feud between the Capulet and Montague families, leading to public brawls. As the tension builds in the streets, two teenagers fall in love at first sight. Married in secret, they hope for reconciliation between their families. When short tempers lead to deadly consequences the young lovers find themselves alone and on the run, facing impossible odds, and making desperate decisions. What starts as a bawdy teenage comedy transforms into a heart-stirring romance for the ages, featuring the shining lyricism of Shakespeare's extraordinary poetry.
This production of Romeo and Juliet will feature performances by Department of Theatre students, as well as special guest performers. Juliet will be portrayed by Mia Carrick, recent recipient of the “Best of Festival” award at the 2011 KCACTF Region VIII Festival held in Los Angeles, for her performance as “Michelle” in the production of Debris, which was also honored with an invitation to participate in the KCACTF National Festival where Carrick will perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in April. The role of Romeo will feature guest artist Nick Dargis, from the Illinois Shakespeare Festival. Guest artist David Gonzales, also from the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, will be featured as Tybalt and will also work with students as the fight captain for the production.
Performances will be May 3 through 8 at the University Amphitheatre. Admission and parking are FREE. Pre-show entertainment will start at 7:15 p.m. The performance will begin at sundown. Low-back chairs or blanket seating only.
