The California State University (CSU), Stanislaus College of the Arts Department of Theatre is pleased to present a Sam Shepard’s ferocious comedy Buried Child.
Shepard, often referred to as “America’s Playwright,” is a theatrical alchemist, turning the raw materials of alcoholism, family dysfunction, loss, and the Myth of The West into dramatic gold. As Buried Child unfolds, taut and agile upon the stage, the audience is drawn into a family’s darkly comic world. Each member—Dodge, the fading patriarch, his wearied wife, Halie, their middle-aged sons Bradley and Tilden, Tilden’s forgotten son Vince and Vince’s girlfriend Shelly—seems to live within separate family histories. Clashes occur over what is real and what is only remembered, as they struggle for connection and separation simultaneously, all while weighted down by a secret. Shepard brilliantly weaves in moments of levity which make the piece shimmer with depth and humor. This true American masterpiece opens at CSU Stanislaus on November 10, 2011, directed by Jere & Patty O’Donnell, with a cast that features student actors alongside Jere O’Donnell as Dodge.
