The CSU Stanislaus team that took part in the research competition at CSU Los Angeles.
Edgar Garibay and Gurpreet Sihota, California State University, Stanislaus Biology majors from Modesto, made a presentation on the effects of cigarette smoke that garnered them a runner-up award at the 23rd Annual California State University Student Research competition.
 
Their report titled “The Effects of Cigarette Smoke on Apoptotic Process in the Spleen and Thymus of Swiss Webster Mice” earned a second place finish in the Biological and Agricultural Sciences category of the May 1 and 2 competition at CSU Los Angeles. They were coached by Dr. Flora Watson and Dr. Mark Grobner, both professors in the CSU Stanislaus Department of Biological Sciences.
 
Other CSU Stanislaus student presenters included Rafael Palomino, a senior Chemistry major from Turlock; senior English majors Ned Weidner and Simi Dhaliwal, both of Turlock; Terese Lunt, a History master's degree student from Waterford; Heather M. Adams, a Psychology graduate student from Mission Hills; and Jenice Arevalo, a Biology major from Los Angeles.
 
Students competed for cash awards by making oral presentations before a panel of judges.
