California State University, Stanislaus students who have excelled in Chicana and Chicano Studies research projects will receive special recognition at a program scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday, March 27 in the John Stuart Rogers Faculty Development Center.
Dr. Lilia De Katzew, Associate Professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies in the Ethnic Studies Department, presents the awards in partnership with the Modesto Chapter of the American GI Forum, a Mexican-American Veterans organization. De Katzew notes that the awards will go to 18 students who have demonstrated hard work, extraordinary dedication, student mentorship, service to the Chicana and Chicano community and student organizations, and outstanding scholarship in completing their upper division research projects. Some have distinguished themselves for artistic/creative production in completing their research projects, De Katzew noted.
The students who will receive “Outstanding Scholarship in Chicana/Chicano Studies” awards are Marcela Montaño, Martha Duran, Esperanza Flores, Alma Cruz, Patricia Vieyra, Kavita Bassi, Starla Cummings, Reyna Leyva, Arturo Leyva Zamora, Hagar Cardenas, Juan Dardon, and Khris Stanton.
Recipients of the “Outstanding Artistic/Creative Achievements in Chicano/Chicana Studies” award are Vanessa Ferrel, Elizabeth Moreno, Leticia Sanchez, Veronica Ornelas, and Roxanne Padilla. Leticia Barrios will receive an “Exemplary Community Service Award.”
