TURLOCK, Calif. — May 23, 2012 — The Pre-Freshman Enrichment Program (PREP) 2012 academy at CSU Stanislaus is three weeks of rigorous learning incorporating hands-on fun with science. The paid program is open to a limited number of students entering grades 7 to 9 this fall.
A range of activities in physics, chemistry, astronomy, earth and life science, programming and robotics are included in the curriculum.
CSU Stanislaus Professor of Mathematics Viji Sundar, a nationally recognized educator in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), has directed the PREP program for 20 years.
“PREP introduces young minds to the marvels of science and technology, and enhances students’ understanding of the power and utility of mathematics,” said Sundar. “We hope to pique the interest of middle school students in science and prepare them for successful high school and university study of math and science.”
The three-week program is $400 for students registering by May 25, and $500 per student beginning May 26. Field trips, daily catered lunch, snacks and four academy T-shirts are included in the program fee. PREP 2012 runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, June 11 through 28.
Interested students must submit a 200-word essay and a completed application, available for download at www.csustan.edu/math/Pages/GrantsPrograms.php. For additional information, members of the public may call (209) 667-3780 or email mathgrants@csustan.edu.
