I am currently working on articles on the imperial federation movement and on the application of the White Australia policy. The former looks at a political movement in the British Empire in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which sought to create a federal government for the Empire; the article focuses on a set of constitutional proposals published between 1871 and 1922, which reveal how the imperial federationists imagined the Empire as a white space— a political community of and for white men. The latter explores the limits of whiteness in Australia in the early decades after Federation, through a set of case studies of individuals who ran afoul of White Australia regulations and failed to fit neatly into white Australians’ racial categories.
