Holding Police Accountable in California: Examining Citizen Complaints Against Officers
This presentation describes research on citizen complaints filed against police officers at 64 police departments and sheriff’s offices in San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Alameda and San Diego counties since 2019. It will highlight common types of complaints, the result of complaints, and challenges of collecting information from police that should be legally publicly available.
About Alexandra Hiropoulos
Alexandra Hiropoulos is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at California State University Stanislaus. She has studied and worked in Greece, England, South Africa, and the United States and focuses her research on xenophobia and xenophobic violence, immigration enforcement, and policing. She has previously worked in crime intelligence with the Serious Crime Analysis Section of the National Crime Agency in England, focusing on serial sexual assaults and homicides. Her research currently focuses on police accountability.
