Jocol is a graduating senior in the BFA program, and she describes her work as a personal narrative. "Growing up, I would hear stories from my parents about their homes, their journey to the U.S, and their loved ones who had passed throughout their life. My aim is to keep the memory of my passed loved ones alive and to tell the story of my family for more generations to come. Their stories and sacrifices are what led me to be here today, in a way these pieces are a way to show my respect to them. My works are often full of familial found objects and imagery that relate to my family, often they are items that stand for them. I use different painting techniques, found objects, sewing and textiles to create somewhat of a collage installation that represents my loved ones.
I am an artist that creates installations of tapestry-like paintings that depict my familial experiences and backgrounds that tie in with my culture. My work plays with different fabrics, painting techniques, and found objects that highlight familial stories in which have been passed down and have shaped my viewpoint on life. My work aims to express the issues of personal trauma and cultural stereotypes that my family and I have met growing up being of hispanic origin here in the U.S. My work sheds light on these traumatic memories and is used to relate to my own relationships and viewpoints as well as honoring my culture through representative objects found in my work."
