David Wetzl transforms random experience into complex visual statements. Spanning works from three recent series, this installation created especially for the California State University, Stanislaus Art Gallery, morph’s the entire gallery to the artist’s vision. The pleasures and discontents of the here and now are probed using the subconscious as filter. Emotional and rational responses regenerate in outpourings of color and form realized in a combination of styles as diverse as abstraction and photorealism. Within this mélange wide-ranging topics of art, politics, and popular culture percolate through layer upon layer of worked, sanded, and obscured acrylic. The process of painting thus mirrors the intricacy by which meaning is derived from everyday inputs.
Wetzl lectures in painting and drawing at CSU Sacramento and Sierra College. His works are included in many private, national collections and the Crocker Art Museum.
