Stan State's recycling program has resulted in a 78% diversion from the landfill. Faculty and staff are provided with a single recycling bin for their office in addition to a small trash container. Most buildings have at least one recycling station and larger buildings have collection areas on each floor in addition to three-stream recycling bins in dining service venues to encourage recycling of plastic beverage bottles, metal beverage cans, and glass bottles.

Stan State manages 110.38 of the total 210.38 acres of the university's landscape organically, without the use of inorganic fertilizers and chemical pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides. Mowers are equipped with mulching decks, so that all grass clippings are left on the lawn to decompose in a process commonly known as grasscycling, which eliminates the need to use inorganic fertilizers, because grass clippings contain valuable nutrients and moisture.  A wood chipper is used to break down pruning materials for use as mulch in the landscape.

Capital Planning & Facilities Management operates and maintains the computerized central energy management system for the campus ensuring that the university is operating in a manner that minimizes energy consumption as outlined in California State University Policy. The primary function of the system is to provide energy consumption savings while providing a comfortable environment for students, faculty, and staff.

Stan State has a rich history of operational sustainability encompassing a broad array of opportunities including energy and water management, waste reduction and disposal, custodial services, the construction and renovation of facilities, and the physical operation of our facilities and landscape.
