Joseph F. Sheley began his duties today as interim president of CSU Stanislaus. Sheley, an alumnus of CSU Sacramento, previously spent 16 years in various leadership positions at his alma mater.

Sheley spent 21 years as a faculty member in sociology at Tulane University after earning his Ph.D. in the same field from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. While at Tulane, he also served as chair of the Department of Sociology and faculty head of the University Senate while at Tulane.

He returned to Sacramento State in 1996, where he served as dean of the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies until 2005. He also spent time as the campus’ executive vice president and its director of alumni relations.

Sheley’s primary research interest is criminology, with an emphasis on the patterns of acquisition and use of firearms by juveniles, and he has been the recipient of numerous grants and has published extensively in those fields.

Sheley replaces former President Hamid Shirvani, who accepted a position as chancellor of the North Dakota state university system.
