State University Grant (SUG)

The State University Grant (SUG) is a need‑based financial aid award available to eligible California State University (CSU) students, including those at Stanislaus State, to help cover tuition and state university fees. This aid does not need to be repaid.

How to Apply:
To be considered for SUG, students must submit either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) each academic year. Stanislaus State reviews your submitted application and related financial information — you do not need to file a separate grant application. It’s best to apply by the priority deadline (typically March 2) to maximize your chance of receiving funds.

Who Is Eligible:
Students must:

  • Be a California resident (or otherwise eligible under state law).
  • Be enrolled at least half‑time in an undergraduate, graduate, or teaching credential program.
  • Demonstrate financial need based on your FAFSA or CADAA by having a qualifying Student Aid Index (SAI).
  • Not be receiving a Cal Grant or other aid/waiver that already covers tuition fees.
  • Be pursuing your first degree/credential (not a second bachelor’s, second master’s, or additional credential).
  • Be in good standing and stay within program‑specific unit limits to maintain eligibility.

Funding for SUG is limited and awards are subject to availability each year. Not all eligible students are guaranteed an award.
