The California State Student Association (CSSA) on Tuesday night named Dr. Hamid Shirvani, President of California State University, Stanislaus the 2006-2007 “President of the Year” at an annual awards event in Long Beach.
CSSA selected President Shirvani for the coveted award because of his reputation for building strong relationships with students and for demonstrating attributes of a strong leader. At CSU Stanislaus, Shirvani is known for being widely accessible to students in his office and throughout campus, attending student government meetings on a regular basis, and even hosting student groups in his home for dinner. Shirvani is frequently seen cheering on the CSU Stanislaus Warriors at athletic events and other student activities.
“I am exceedingly honored and humbly surprised by this recognition,” Shirvani said. “The students here at Cal State Stanislaus are truly exceptional, and I am proud to serve as their President.”
Commenting about CSSA earlier this year, President Shirvani said, “The California State Student Association is extraordinary not only because of its historical significance, but also due to its exceptional and determined commitment to its mission of protecting the interests of the over 400,000 students of the California State University system. Their commitment to access, diversity, and the pursuance of students' rights and interests is unparalleled and honorable."
The CSSA subcommittee on University Affairs recommended President Shirvani to the full CSSA Board after reviewing nominations from 9 of the 23 CSU campuses system-wide.
Andrew Janz, CSSA's Vice Chair for Internal Affairs and incoming Associated Students President at CSU Stanislaus, said, “President Shirvani is committed to the students at CSU Stanislaus. He consistently recognizes and rewards their hard work and achievements, and he supports them when difficult situations arise by being a unique and active problem solver. We are fortunate to have him as our President.”
Janz continued, “President Shirvani consistently declares that he has three main priorities - 'students, students, and students'. What more could you ask for in a University President?”
Chelsea Minor, Associated Students President at CSU Stanislaus, said, “Dr. Shirvani means so much to the students at our university. He advocates for us and takes time to get to know us personally. My educational experience has been richer because of his leadership and, from him, I have learned how to be a more effective and responsive leader myself.”
Nadir Vissanjy, Chair of the CSSA Executive Committee, said, “President Shirvani has been a champion by communicating well and working effectively with students. His positive attitude and persona have made him well qualified to be the Robert C. Maxim President of the Year.”
Under Shirvani's leadership earlier this year, California State University, Stanislaus was ranked one of the top 366 colleges and universities in the nation by the Princeton Review, an achievement that Stanislaus students are extremely proud of and one that contributed to Shirvani's nomination.
