This page is designed to give instructors and students suggestions for proceding with course activities in the case that Canvas becomes unavailable.
Faculty
Communication with Students
- Post updates via university-supported tools (e.g., myStanState email roster).
Clearly communicate:
- Expectations during the outage
- Temporary submission methods (email, MS Teams if available)
- Revised deadlines (if needed) once Canvas is up with Assign-to
Assessments (Quizzes/Exams)
Faculty should:
- Save submissions in organized folders locally or in OneDrive
- Acknowledge receipt (especially for high-stakes assignments)
Options during outage:
- Delay assessments until Canvas is restored
Grading & Recordkeeping
Track grades offline using:
- Excel Sheets
Maintain clear records of:
- Submission timestamps
- Grades and feedback
- Upload grades to Canvas once service is restored
After Canvas is Restored
- Upload all collected assignments for recordkeeping (submit on behalf of the student).
- Upload grades (import grades into Canvas) and feedback into Canvas
Use “Assign-To” settings to:
- Extend deadlines for individual students
- Reopen quizzes/assignments if needed
Communicate clearly with students about any updates or changes.
Students
Student Assignment Submission
- Students submit work via email or MS Teams directly to instructor (include course ID + assignment name in subject line).
