Raymond Hsu

Ray Hsu is a Lecturer in the Department of English at California State University, Stanislaus, where they teach the writing of poetry. They are the author of Cold Sleep Permanent Afternoon and Anthropy, published by Nightwood Editions. Their poetry has received the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award and the E.J. Pratt Medal and Prize in Poetry.

Before joining Stan State, Hsu taught creative writing and courses in gender, race, and social justice at the University of British Columbia. As a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, they founded a service-learning course that brought writing instruction into a correctional institution.

At Stan State, Hsu is leading a faculty-and-student pilot examining how current AI tools perform on real college assignments. Student researchers are testing assignments with AI systems and documenting what the tools can do, where they fail, and what intellectual work remains for students. The project aims to help faculty identify and teach the skills that matter when AI can produce fluent answers.
