California State University, Stanislaus is ranked one of the nation's best 366 colleges, according to The Princeton Review, thereby joining an elite circle in which only two other CSU schools have ever been included (Sonoma State and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo).

The New York-based company known for its highly touted educational publications and services has for the first time selected CSU Stanislaus for inclusion in the upcoming 2008 edition of its popular annual "Best 366 Colleges" guidebook, scheduled for nationwide release in August.

"I am highly delighted by this latest acknowledgment of the excellent education that students receive at CSU Stanislaus," CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani said. "While I am quite pleased with this recognition, I have to admit that I'm not surprised. Over the past year, this University has made great strides in improving and expanding its academic programs and providing students with a fine educational experience. This recognition reflects favorably on our outstanding faculty, staff, and, of course, our wonderful students."

Only about 10 percent of the colleges in America are included in the "Best 366 Colleges" guidebook, according to Robert Franek, Vice President/Publishing for The Princeton Review. Selected colleges vary by region, size, selectivity, and character, but each one is an outstanding institution that The Princeton Review recommends to readers and users of its Web site. CSU Stanislaus clearly fit the criteria The Princeton Review was looking for, Franek noted.

"It is our flagship guide to 'the creme of the crop' institutions for undergraduates," Franek said. "We chose them as our 'best' based on several criteria including: our regard for their academic programs and other offerings, institutional data we collect from the schools, and the opinions of students, parents, and educators we talk to and survey."

The new recognition is a step up for CSU Stanislaus. For the first time in its 47-year history, the University was last year designated one of the best schools for academic excellence in the West in the 2007 edition of The Princeton Review's "Best Colleges: Region by Region" online ratings based on student opinion data gathered from 656 colleges and universities.
