Considering the changes that the State of California has experienced under a new governor, California State University, Stanislaus Professor of Politics Lawrence L. Giventer chose the right time to bring out the second edition of his book "Governing California."

Published by McGraw-Hill, the completely updated second edition addresses the important processes of California government in a unique way, according to Giventer.

"Students learn about their government -- how it works and how it affects them -- by examining some of its successes and failures," Giventer said. "I used a ground-level approach that focuses mainly on what government does and how its actions affect nearly every aspect of our lives."

Included in the book are more than 80 colorful and informative tables and figures, and a full-color insert that strengthens the author's visual and narrative approach to learning about California's government processes.

A member of the CSU Stanislaus faculty since 1975 and sought after for his political expertise and analysis, Giventer teaches post-baccalaureate-level courses in public policy analysis and public sector quantitative methods, and undergraduate courses in American government. He is also the author of "Statistical Analysis for Public Administration," a book about the applications of quantitative methods in the public sector – that will also soon be published in a second edition. Giventer founded the University's nationally-accredited Master of Public Administration program and directed the program for 20 years.

Giventer has served as a political analyst for many media outlets — radio, television, print, and Internet — and as a consultant and advisory committee chair for state and local government agencies.
