The California State University Board of Trustees has approved an update of the California State University, Stanislaus Campus Physical Master Plan that will serve as a guide for development to an eventual enrollment of 12,000 students while preserving the open green space and mature landscaping that makes CSU Stanislaus a uniquely beautiful campus.

The final approved environmental impact report and campus master plan update will steer CSU Stanislaus growth and expansion over the next 10 to 15 years to accommodate the University’s eventual capacity enrollment of 12,000 full-time students by 2027. It is the first major update for the master plan since 1968, three years after the current campus opened.

“The goals of this update were to incorporate needed changes while maintaining the unique architectural character of the campus,” CSU Stanislaus President Dr. Hamid Shirvani said. “A strong emphasis has been placed on balancing the impact of growth with overall architectural character so that the sense of place and academic context of our beautiful campus will be maintained.”

A major library expansion project, renovation of the original science building into a classroom facility, addition of a 1,200-seat auditorium in the College of the Arts complex, and another multi-story residence hall are high priority proposals on the CSU Stanislaus master plan and capital projects list. At the same time, preservation of green space and a park-like setting is a top priority in the plan.

Constructing buildings and parking areas strategically to preserve a green and park-like campus environment with ample open space is a central component in the updated plan, notes CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani. Future construction will be concentrated around the campus core and on the southeast of the campus to minimize the impact of traffic on Crowell Road.

Parking structures for about 6,000 vehicles are expected to eventually replace parking lots, and campus housing is likely to expand from the current capacity of 650 to about 3,000 as taller structures are built.
