With the current semester well underway, the Stanislaus State School of the Arts is pleased to announce the highlights of its fall season. Art exhibitions, concerts and theatre performances will be staged for the campus and surrounding communities to enjoy. Special guest artists and student performances blend this season to provide artistic and cultural enrichment for the region.

The Department of Music will host Alon Goldstein on Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Snider Recital Hall. Goldstein has dazzled audiences around the world with his rich and intricate piano performances. Goldstein’s solo performance will include words by Bach, Schubert, Bartok, Debussy and Ginastera.

“Goldstein is an outstanding artist-musician whose playing demonstrates great sensitivity for the philosophical and emotional meaning behind the music,” said Sarah Chan, keyboard studies coordinator in the Department of Music. “He’s also a generous humanitarian who exudes a spirit of joy and passion about what he does. Whether in conversation, performance or coaching, his example of presence and openness in giving to others is exemplary.”

Stan State’s Art Space on Main in downtown Turlock will host “If Destruction be Our Lot” through the month of October. The artist and Stan State faculty member, Martin Azevedo, will host a featured talk on Oct. 13 at 5:30 p.m., where he will share his vision and inspiration. Azevedo utilizes photography, video, sculpture and printmaking to deal with ideas of power, masculinity, mortality and the human condition. The reception and talk are public, and will be held at Art Space on Main.

The Department of Theatre will host two performances in October. Spend two hours with the inhabitants of Frank’s 24-hour Diner in New York at “Balm in Gilead,” performed in the Main Stage Theatre on Oct. 12-16 and 20-23. This play is recommended for mature audiences.

And just in time for the height of the political season comes “Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins Featuring Sara Gaston,” in the Main Stage Theatre on Oct. 27, 28, 29 at 8 p.m. This tour-de-force one-woman show features guest artist Sara Gaston in the title role of Molly Ivins, the Texas-born author and humorist, as she shares her unique take on American politics.

“We are particularly excited about this semester's theatre offerings, because of the substantial participation of our students,” said Department of Theatre Chair John Mayer. “And all of this lines up for our ultimate production of the year, Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men,’ which will be produced in the outdoor University Amphitheater the first week in May 2017.”

This season’s complete calendar of events, as well as listings for events coming in the winter and spring, can be found on the School of the Arts Events page.
