From the Dean

“In trying to solve the terrifying problems that face us in the world today, we naturally turn to the things we do best. We play from strength, and our strength is science and technology.”

These are the opening lines from B. F. Skinner’s book Beyond Freedom and Dignity, published in 1971. More than 50 years later, these words still ring true. The education you receive at Stan State will prepare you to make the future a safe and fruitful one for you and your family for many years to come.

The College of Science (COS) at Stan State provides a first-class STEM education – we have one of the lowest student-to-faculty ratios in the entire CSU system and the university is ranked in the top 10 of all California Colleges. The College of Science is an intellectual community dedicated to providing students and faculty the scientific, mathematical, and technological capacity to contribute to their disciplines and succeed in their academic and professional pursuits. The dedicated faculty and staff seek to educate students through quality instruction, experiential learning, research experience, community engagement, and effective advising.

We have undergraduate majors in biology, chemistry, child development, cognitive studies, computer science, geology, health science, mathematics, nursing, physics, psychology, and physical sciences. We also offer graduate programs in biological sciences, nursing, psychology and soon mathematics. Our faculty participate in the multidisciplinary master’s program as well.

The college faculty and staff have successfully obtained grants that often help fund students’ experiential learning. The College typically has between $3 to $5 million or more in federal, state, and private grants. These funds support faculty and student research – students work alongside faculty to solve the perplexing problems that face us today and in the future.
