The Writing Center works collaboratively with undergraduates and graduate students to help them develop and craft their writing.  Tutors help writers approach their writing assignments and develop their own writing process.  Usually, tutors first help writers address larger issues, such as focus, organization, and development; then, tutors assist writers with sentence-level issues, such as grammar, punctuation, and diction.

The Writing Center tutors do not proofread, edit, or revise student papers.  Instead, tutors work with each student to develop his/her own writing process and revision skills.

Weekly Tutoring Appointment

Meet with a tutor weekly on the same day and time for a 50-minute session.  Together you will develop priorities for improving your writing over a period of time.  Go to our Tutoring Request Application to schedule a weekly appointment.

Same-day Tutoring

Call 667-3642 or stop by the center after 9:30 a.m. to sign in for an available 25-minute same-day tutoring session.  Same-day Tutoring is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.  You may request one session per day, up to two per week.

Online Tutoring

You now can get writing help online.  Online writing tutors will collaborate with students to help them develop their writing.  We also offer online tutoring to help students prepare for the WPST.  Go to our Online Tutoring Application to Request an online tutor.

Writer's Online Resource Directory  (W.O.R.D)

Students have access to links, handouts, and other interactive resources to get help with a variety of writing issues and concerns.  Our Writer's Online Resource Directory (W.O.R.D.) can be accessed during a tutoring session in the Writing Center or from your personal device for help while you are writing.

WPST Preparation

During a WPST tutoring session, the tutor will help the writer learn to decipher prompts amd understand the WPST scoring guide.  Tutors may also review an essay the writer has written to a WPST prompt and provide suggestions for revision.  We also offer WPST  Review Workshops each term for students who are preparing to take the WPST for the first time.

Faculty Resources

The Faculty Resources page provides information for instructors whose classes incorporate one hour of workshop in the Writing Center (ENGL 1001/1006/3000 and ESL courses).  There is also information on referring students to the Writing Center for help, referral forms, and guidance on providing students with feedback on their writing.

ESL Tutoring

Students enrolled in ESL 1000, 1005 or 2000 will attend a weekly one-on-one tutoring session as part of their ESL course requirement.  The Writing Center also offers specialized  ESL tutoring to students not enrolled in ESL courses.  Go to our Tutoring Request Application to set up a weekly appointment, and please specify if you'd like an ESL tutor in the special request portion of the application.
