In consultation with the Technology and Learning Subcommittee of UEPC, the Office of Information Technology has upgraded ESB 23 with new furniture and technology to transform the room into an "active learning classroom" based on the pedagogical idea of connecting the physical space of a classroom more directly to student engagement and learning. Each semester, as part of these developments, OIT solicits participation in an ongoing room-usage pilot. The goal of these activities is to put the new equipment through real-world instructional uses and to establish best practices around the pedagogy of active learning. The lessons learned in the pilot will be applied to the creation additional active learning classrooms.
Semester Cohort Information
These pages contain information about specific dates and timelines for each cohort of the pilot.
The pilot is open to regular university courses and courses managed by University Extended Education. The pilot is intended for classes that will be held in the active learning classroom for the entire semester. Instructors who wish to try out the room for a limited time will be admitted to the pilot on a space-available basis after complete courses have been admitted. All courses that will use the active learning classroom during the pilot must meet the following requirements:
- Enrollment cap no greater than 30 students. This is a hard cap based on room furniture.
- Class time conforms to the standard university class schedule.
Interested faculty will need the following items:
- Completed application form, including a brief explanation of specific activities that will take place in order to take advantage of the active learning classroom setting.
- Approval by the instructor’s department chair/program director must be secured before the submission will be finalized. Application forms will be automatically routed to department chairs for electronic acceptance before being sent to Glenn Pillsbury, the pilot coordinator.
Contact Glenn Pillsbury (email@example.com) with any questions about the room or participation in the pilot.
