2/2003 - 6/2009  Health Services Supervisor / School Nurse Merced Union High School District

  • Hired as first credentialed school nurse in the district in order to create and manage a health services program.  In six years the program grew to two additional school nurses, two LVN’s, and  eight health aides serving eight school sites with 10,000 students. 
  • Set up and run six health offices including medication administration, physical assessments determining if ill students should be sent home, first aid, designed most forms, and planned supplies.
  • Worked as the site nurse for two multi cultural schools, Merced High School with 2,700 students and Livingston High School with 1,100 students.  Duties include making home visits, assessing physical and mental health, referring to appropriate follow up agencies, interacting with students doing health education and health counseling, as well as supervising health offices.
  • Completed  health and developmental assessments for special education students and participated in Individual Educational Program meetings to facilitate disabled children with health needs related to completing education.  Trained and supervised health aides doing procedures with students.
  • Designed ADHD student and parent education and assessment program.
  • Trained and evaluated health services employees.
  • Consulted on health curriculum and taught test preparation course for health teachers seeking credential in this area.
  • Facilitated CPR classes and taught health classes for 96 employees who assist with health services and taught coaches class on diabetes and epi-pens.
  • Participate on School Attendance and Review Boards and Student Study Team meetings. 
  • Collaborated and facilitated Medi-cal billing programs.
  • Directed and conducted vision and hearing screenings for 5,000 students a year.
  • Helped design district wellness policy and program.
  • Facilitated screening 2,500 students for obesity research.
  • Designed flu prevention program, worked on pandemic flu policy.

  • Worked with adolescent parents, designed health curriculum, completed health and parenting assessments on students, made home visits, completed physical and developmental assessments on infants in child care center, lectured once a week on health topics, wrote a cookbook for adolescent parents and pregnant adolescents, and designed and ran nutrition education and cooking program.

  • Co-taught with a Mental Health Professional a Parenting Program- Night Class for 12 weeks, once a week- for court ordered parents, helped design the curriculum.

Grant Applications:

December 2012  I applied for a university RSCA grant, but my proposal was not accepted.  The study will examine relationship between the Ages and Stages Child Development Assessment Questionnaires (ASQ) and student nurse reliable utilization of the tool.

May 2011  I applied for, in collaboration with Heidi Britt CSU Stanislaus ORSP, Dr. Rudy Ortiz, UC Merced, and Golden Valley Health Centers, a National Institute Of Food And Agriculture, U.S. Department Of Agriculture, Agriculture And Food Research Initiative, Competitive Grants Program, Childhood Obesity Prevention Challenge Area. Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance: (CFDA) under 10.310. Project entitled Culturally-appropriate Healthy Eating for Families (CHEF).  Received a medium rating and was not funded.

May 2011 Collaboration with Dr. Rudy Ortiz and the Center of Excellence for the Study of Health Disparities in the Rural and Ethnic Underserved to submit a NIH NIMHD R01 (RFA MD-11-001) titled, “Metabolomic & Metabolic Profiles in Obese Hispanic Adolescents”.  My role will be identical to that in the Program Solicitation: NIMHD Exploratory Centers of Excellence (P20); RFA-MD-11-002. Not funded.
