Annette Nellen, CPA, Esq., is a professor in and director of San José State University's graduate tax program (MST), teaching courses in tax research, accounting methods, individual tax, property transactions, employment tax, ethics, leadership, and tax policy.

She chaired the Academic Senate at SJSU and has chaired and served on numerous committees including MPP searches and evaluations, accreditation and the Athletics Board. In 2013 she was a Provost Fellow where she designed and ran the Academic Affairs Leadership Discovery Program still in operation today. In 2005 she created the Campus Reading Program now in its 17th year serving the entire campus community. Annette helps promote awareness and understanding of SJSU rich history dating back to 1857.

Annette is a past chair of the AICPA Tax Executive Committee (October 2016 to May 2019) and presently serves on the AICPA Tax Practice & Procedure Committee. Annette is co-chair of the AICPA/NASBA Tax Compliance and Planning Task Force working on curriculum information related to the new CPA Evolution licensure model. She is a former chair of the ABA Tax Section’s Sales, Exchanges & Basis Committee and the AICPA’s Individual and Self-Employed Technical Resource Panel, as well as a current (and past) member of the California Lawyers Association Taxation Section’s Executive Committee. She also serves on CalCPA’s Accounting Education Committee.

Annette is the recipient of the 2013 Arthur J. Dixon Memorial Award given by the Tax Division of the AICPA, the highest award given by the accounting profession in the area of taxation, and the 2019 Benjamin F. Miller Award from the Taxation Section of the California Lawyers Association for achievement and contribution in the field of state and local taxation law. Annette is a fellow in the American College of Tax Counsel.

Annette is the author of Bloomberg BNA Tax Portfolio #533, Amortization of Intangibles. She is an editor and author for the Southwestern Federal Taxation textbooks, a regular contributor for Tax Analyst’s State Tax Notes (Moving Forward? column) and contributor to CCH Top Federal Tax Issues. She is a frequent speaker on tax updates, various individual and property transactions tax rules, new economy tax matters, virtual currency, tax reform, and federal and multistate tax policy. Annette hosts the 21st Century Taxation website and blog, as well as several websites on tax reform, state tax nexus, marijuana tax rules and ethical considerations, and virtual currency and blockchain technology. She has testified before the House Ways and Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee as well as various state tax committees and reform commissions.
