CSU Stanislaus to host Division II West Regional Softball Tournament

California State University, Stanislaus, home of one of the nation's top-ranked softball teams, has been selected to host the May 10-14 NCAA Division II Women's Softball Regional Tournament.

It is the first time in its 47-year history that CSU Stanislaus has been selected to host one of the eight regional softball tournaments from which the winning teams will advance to the national championship finals May 17-21 in Akron, Ohio. Teams for the West Region Tournament at CSU Stanislaus will be announced by the NCAA this Sunday, May 6.

"This is exciting news for Cal State Stanislaus and the Warriors softball team which has had an outstanding season," University President Hamid Shirvani said. "This tournament will bring some of the finest teams in the country to our campus and our team will be playing with national championship determination."

With a combination of great pitching, solid hitting, and power, Coach Jan Shefkowitz's Warriors have rolled to a 43-15 overall record. They are ranked 12th in the nation and are second in the most recent West Region rankings behind top-ranked Humboldt State which is third in the national poll. Other teams in the West Region Top 10 include UC San Diego, Hawaii Pacific, Hawaii-Hilo, Seattle, Western Washington, Central Washington, Sonoma State, and Western Oregon.

The West Region Tournament schedule at CSU Stanislaus includes games from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on May 10, 11, and 12, noon and 2:30 p.m. on May 13, and concluding with the championship game at noon on May 14. All games will be played at the Warrior Softball Field.

"The team is very excited about playing in a tournament of this caliber on their home field," said Schefkowitz, in her 14th season as Warriors head coach. "The Turlock Convention and Visitors Bureau is sponsoring the tourney, and I know CSU Stanislaus and the community will do a first class job of hosting the best teams from all over the West."

CSU Stanislaus was one of four teams to qualify for the first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Championship Tournament on May 3-5 at Humboldt State in what should be a preview matchup between the top two teams in the West Region Tournament.
