Who is required to participate in the Early Start Program?
New first time freshman who have the below ELM and/or EPT scores are required to begin remediation during the summer prior to Fall enrollment. CSU Stanislaus students who do not take any Early Start class will not be allowed to attend CSU Stanislaus in the fall.
- ELM less than 50
- EPT less than 147
What if I do not participate in the Early Start Program?
Early Start is a requirement for Fall enrollment. However, if you have circumstances beyond your control that prevent you from participating in any Early Start class, you must submit a written appeal to Ron Noble at firstname.lastname@example.org. The appeal must be typed and it must include the extenuating circumstance that you feel shows your inability to participate in the Early Start Program. All appeal requests are due by June 6, 2014.

Can I advance or complete remediation with Early Start courses?
MATH: ESM 0103
Students earning CR in ESM 0103 are eligible to enroll in either MATH 0106 or Math 0110 in the Fall. Students who participate sufficiently in ESM 0103 but have not made sufficient progress for improved math placement receive a grade of RP. A grade of RP means you will need to take Math 0103 in the Fall even though you have satisfied the Math Early Start requirement.
MATH: ESM 0106
Students earning CR in ESM 0106 are eligible to enroll in GE level mathematics in the Fall. Students who participate sufficiently in ESM 0106 but have not made sufficient progress for improved math placement receive a grade of RP. RP does not make students eligible for GE level mathematics classes, but does satisfy the Early Start requirement. If you receive a grade of RP you will need to either take Math 0106 or Math 0110 in the Fall.
MATH: ESM 0099
Students earning CR in ESM 0099 are eligible to advance to the next level of mathematics based on their placement. Students who participate sufficiently in lab activities but have not made sufficient progress for improved math placement receive a grade of RP. A grade of RP does not allow students to advance to the next level of remediation, nor does it make students eligible for GE level mathematics classes but does satisfy the Math Early Start requirement.
ENGLISH: The Early Start English courses only satisfy the Early Start requirement. Since CSU Stanislaus has implemented a Directed Self-Placement option for first-year composition, you have the opportunity to make your own decision about which composition course to enroll in after completing Early Start.
How do I indicate the way I will complete the Early Start Program?
You must indicate your plan to complete the Early Start Program on the Early Start Smart Page. The Early Start Smart Page will be a link made available in your student portal ONLY to students who accept their admission.
How do I register for the Early Start Program?
Once you have completed the Early Start Smart Page, you will receive specific registration information from the campus you selected to complete this requirement.
Can I take more than one Early Start course in the same subject?
Yes, students can take up to two Early Start courses in the same subject. For example, if you scored into ESM 0103 and receive an advancing score then you can take ESM 0106, having an opportunity to complete remediation in the summer, again if you receive an advancing score.
How much will the Early Start Program cost?
Students who have an EFC of 5000 or less will be eligible for an Early Start Financial Aid Waiver. If required to pay, the cost of the Early Start Program is $182 per unit plus $1 for Student Union and $1 for Health Fees. Costs will vary if you elect to complete this requirement through an approved California Community College course. Please visit our Fees Schedule for more information.
Do I need to buy a parking permit?
A permit is required when parking in any of the parking lots on campus.
