Stanislaus State student Kathleen Giles won the Flachman Award for the best paper at the 13th Annual CSU Honors Student Conference at Sacramento State on Saturday. Her paper, on intrafamilial violence in Santa Clara la Laguna, Guatemala, aims to better understand the history and development of gender-based violence in Guatemala, to explore the relationship between the current rise in violence and the past civil war, and to investigate what factors are impeding women’s access to services.

In addition, Josephine Hazelton earned honorable mention for her paper on barriers to active transportation among elementary school children in Turlock.

The Flachman Award was created in 2014 in memory of Michael Flachman, the long-time director of the Cal State Bakersfield honors program.

Both Giles and Hazelton will be presenting their papers during 15th annual Stanislaus State Honors Capstone Conference, Friday, May 6 from 11:30-5 p.m. at the Faculty Development Center. Hazelton’s presentation is scheduled for 1:50 p.m., while Giles will present her paper at 3:30 p.m. Between the presentations, Alexis Boutin, a bioarcheology professor from Sonoma State, will offer the keynote address.
