Josephine Hazelton, a political science major at Stanislaus State, has been announced as the first winner of the Mayor’s Public Policy Award. Her project “Catching the Bus: Public Transportation in Turlock” aims to improve access to municipal bus service for the community.

Turlock Mayor Gary Soiseth is donating his mayoral stipend and raising additional funds to help underwrite the award. He established the annual competition last fall to encourage students to apply their skills to finding solutions for regional public policy issues.

The $3,000 award will help Hazelton’s research during the spring semester. She will be working on the project with faculty mentor Gerard Wellman, and Soiseth has offered Hazelton an internship with the City of Turlock Department of Engineering to give her access to research resources.
