On July 11, Gov. Jerry Brown appointed Kilolo Brodie, department chair of the Stanislaus State Master of Social Work program, to the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities.

“This appointment is, in essence, a liaison position representing my local region (covering Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Stanislaus, and San Joaquin counties) and the State Council headquarters in Sacramento,” Brodie said. “I will help to convey information from this geographic area, communicating needs, concerns, and successes to the state level.

From the state meetings, she will relay policy actions to regional meetings. An inclusive loop of agencies and community partners bodes well for the social work profession she said.

Her goal is to increase the community’s knowledge and comfort level regarding persons who have varying abilities, Brodie said. “I envision our Stan State campus continuing to be a visible supporter and strong proponent of the inclusion of persons with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.”

Brodie joined the University in 2010 after working with a number of higher education and social support organizations. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Work and is a graduate of the Master of Social Work program she now leads.

Before joining the faculty, she worked in the field of social work for a number of years, including with the Columbia Heights Shaw Family Support Collaborative in Washington D.C. from 2001-2003, and with the Stanislaus County Community Services Agency Child Protective Services Division from 1998-2000. She is a member of the National Down Syndrome Congress, the Stanislaus County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Community Advisory Committee, and the California Faculty Association Disabilities Caucus and African American Caucus.
