Music Alumnus Shines on World Series Stage

Dan Olivas SingingDan Olivas has sung in front of some large crowds. He sang the National Anthem before 1,000 fans at an international auto race at Laguna Seca. He did the same at a minor-league baseball game in front of about 3,000.

The CSU Stanislaus graduate and staff member found himself on a slightly bigger stage Oct. 25, when he sang "God Bless America" in front of more than 40,000 fans and millions more on live television during Game 2 of the World Series. (See video and media coverage of Olivas' performance.)

County CEO Sees Opportunities to Partner With Alma Mater

Monica Nino began her professional career as an accountant in the Stanislaus County auditor-controller's office. Then she went back to school, taking night classes at CSU Stanislaus and earning a Master of Public Administration degree in 1995.

Thanks in part to that degree, Nino this year was appointed CEO of Stanislaus County — a position in which she oversees the entire county government, including 26 departments, more than 3,700 employees and an operating budget of $891 million.

Get Involved, Make a Difference

 

As the year draws toward its close, CSU Stanislaus alumni will have opportunities to speak their minds about alumni programs and support the university.

Alumni Attitude Survey – Alumni are being asked to participate in a confidential online survey that will help the university determine what is important to them, and will shape future alumni programming and communications. Take the survey now.

Stan Fund Campaign – In December, alumni will receive calls from current CSU Stanislaus students and a letter from President Joseph Sheley asking for contributions to the Stan Fund. The Stan Fund supports critical needs such as scholarships, research, faculty travel and equipment for students and faculty. "Alumni contributions are needed now more than ever," said Director of Alumni Relations Shannon Nichols. "We appreciate all of our alumni who are standing up to support CSU Stanislaus."

Business Economist Predicts Accelerated Growth for Valley Economy Over the Next Two Years

CSU Stanislaus business economics Professor Gökçe Soydemir projects that the San Joaquin Valley economy will continue to improve in 2013 and 2014, and will do so at faster rates than in previous years. In his second annual Business Forecast Report (download the report free), Soydemir cited two main reasons for his positive projection: employment growth well above that of previous years, and a more positive outlook among both consumers and business owners, as evidenced by consumer confidence and new manufacturing orders.

Trans-California Pathway Comes to Fruition

A unique project designed to illustrate the native plant communities that historically existed along a transect from the Central Valley to the High Sierra was dedicated during a ceremony at CSU Stanislaus on Oct. 25.

The Trans-California Pathway is an outdoor arboretum located on the south side of the CSU Stanislaus campus. The pathway will be used as an outdoor laboratory and source of material for biology classes, an educational attraction for the university and the community as a whole, and a valuable field trip destination for young students.
