New President Knows the Importance of
Alumni Pride
CSU Stanislaus’ new president, Joseph F. Sheley, has firsthand experience with the contagious nature of university pride.
Sheley boarded a crowded hotel elevator last year while attending an event as provost and vice president for academic affairs at his alma mater, Sacramento State. One man noticed a Sac State pin on Sheley’s lapel and asked if he worked there.
“Yeah, but I also went to school there,” he replied. Within moments, everyone in the elevator had revealed that they, too, were Sac State graduates. “And our two kids are going there now,” a woman said.
“And they were proud,” Sheley recalled. “Man, I came off that elevator feeling 40 feet tall.”

Alumnus Launches Endowed Scholarship
for History Grad Students
When Lawrence Broe (History, B.A. ’77, M.A. '79) received an appeal in the mail from CSU Stanislaus last year, he knew he wanted to give to his alma mater — but he had a different type of gift in mind. By including CSU Stanislaus in his estate plans, Broe was able to launch one of the largest endowed scholarships ever created by an alumnus of the university.
