This American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) course helps participants identify and eliminate potentially hazardous conditions in their environment, recognize emergencies and make appropriate decisions for first aid care. This course teaches skills that participants need to know to give immediate care to a suddenly ill or injured person until more advanced medical care arrives. Certain employees may be required to take this course (Contact S&RM). Certification is valid for two years.

Employees that use Extensible boom platforms, Aerial ladders, articulating boom platforms, vertical towers, and any combination of such devices will be trained in securing and locking in place for travel, safety checks, body belts, boom and basket load limits and bursting safety factor. Employees must be trained prior to using said devices.

Asbestos containing materials (ACM) can be found in some campus facilities. It is important that all employees follow proper work practices to minimize the potential for disturbing ACM. This training is for employees who may be exposed to ACM in the course of their jobs. Employees who are exposed to airborne concentrations of asbestos at or above the PEL and/or excursion limit will be trained in the areas of health effects associated with exposure, engineering and work practice controls, emergency situations, cleanup procedures and personal protective equipment. Course is valid for one year.

Back injuries account for one in every five job related injuries in California workplaces. This course is designed to give the participant injury prevention techniques, available lifting equipment, proper lifting techniques, and knowledge regarding lifting hazards specific to your workplace. Valid for the life of employment with the University.

Participants will learn how to protect themselves against potentially infectious material they may come in contact with. Participants will also learn the benefits of proper hand washing techniques and how to prevent the spread of germs in the workplace. Required for those whose job requires them to come in contact or have the potential of coming in contact with blood or other body fluids. Course is valid for one year.

This training will have an emphasis on the specific safety and health hazards, procedures, and safe practices applicable to the employee’s job tasks. Employees that are responsible for the maintenance or operation of boilers must take this training annually then once every three years.

Employees that may be exposed to certain carcinogenic substances will be in the nature of carcinogenic hazards, the purpose of medical surveillance, decontamination procedures, emergency practices and procedures, and information to aid in the recognition and evaluation of situations which may result in a release of a carcinogen. Must be renewed annually.

The training shall thoroughly cover safety and health hazards present on site, use of personal protective equipment, work practices by which the employee can minimize risks, and safe use of engineering controls and equipment. Employees who will operate chain saws during their employment will need this training prior to operating a chain saw.

Compressed gas cylinders pose health and safety risks. Employees will learn about topics such as; safety and health hazards present on site, use of personal protective equipment, work practices by which the employee can minimize risks, and safe use of engineering controls and equipment. Employees must be trained in safe use prior to using gas cylinders.

Confined spaces are areas that have openings large enough and so configured that an employee can bodily enter and perform assigned work; has limited or restricted means for entry or exit; and is not designed for continuous employee occupancy. The training includes recognition of potentially harmful atmospheres and physical hazards associated with these spaces. Includes the practices and procedures to protect employees form the hazards of entry into permit-required confined spaces. This training is required for any employee who may be required to enter permit required confined spaces.

This one-hour online course covers advanced defensive driving techniques to reduce your risk associated with driving a motor vehicle. You will learn and review general safety guidelines such as how to manage distractions while driving and safe driving techniques for avoiding collisions. According to the State Administrative Manual (SAM)-0751 Operator Requirements, any individual driving for University business is required to take this course. Couse is valid for four years.

The Electrical Safety course provides training in the minimum safety requirements and assists in the elimination of accidents which may result from the operation, installation, removal, use and maintenance of electrical equipment and tools. Employees responsible for the Electrical System on campus are required to attend. Valid for the life of employment with the University.

Learn recognition and preventative measures for the safety hazards associated with elevated work, emergency action plans and fall arrest systems. Employees that use powered platforms and equipment for building maintenance must be trained prior to use.

To ensure the employees are safe from fire and other emergencies you will be trained in the proper procedures for emergency escape, emergency evacuation routes, identifying evacuation gathering areas, and how to report fires and other emergencies. Valid for the life of employment with the University.

Every year many individuals sustain work related eye injuries. Find out the risks to your eyes in the workplace; the types of protective eyewear to guard your eyes; and first aid procedures if you damage your eyes.

This course teaches employees how to recognize and minimize those areas where falls may occur. The training will include fall protection systems, controlled access zones and guardrails, personal fall arrest, safety nets, warning lines and safety monitoring systems. Must be taken annually.

Fire extinguisher training is designed to familiarize employees with the types, use, and limitations of operating a fire extinguisher. Anyone who may have the potential for the extinguishing of a small fire should learn the basic operation of a Fire Extinguisher. Participants will use the skills taught to put out an actual fire.

Your feet at work: This course will address foot pain, common problems, protecting your feet at work, the right shoes for the job, choosing the best safety shoes, and health and safety legislation.

Industrial trucks require out of the ordinary safety procedures. The required safety training includes general safety rules along with ascending and descending grades, fork safety, and driving safety. It also includes safety information regarding motorized hand trucks. Anyone who operates a Forklift / Manlift / Scissorlift is required to attend. This course is required prior to operating such lifts and certification is required every 3 years.

Employees who use or may be exposed to potentially hazardous substances or harmful agents shall be informed about the hazards of those substances or physical agents and shall be trained in the precautions to take to prevent exposure and what to do if they are accidentally exposed. Valid for life of employment with the University.

This course takes you through the make-up of the hand, injuries to the hand, common hazards, administrative controls, engineering controls, personal protective equipment, and safety points.

Employees who use or may be exposed to potentially hazardous substances or harmful agents shall be informed about the hazards of those substances or physical agents and shall be trained in the precautions to take to prevent exposure and what to do if they are accidentally exposed. Valid for life of employment with the University.

Employees who responsible for the cleanup of hazardous materials upon accidental spills or releases will be trained regarding safety and health hazards associated with material spills; the mitigation process for cleanup, how to report spills, and who will respond to spills. Valid for life of employment with the University.

For employees that are responsible for the management of hazardous materials, and may have contact with or be exposed to hazardous substances, health hazards or safety hazards in relation to hazardous waste. The training shall thoroughly cover safety and health hazards present on site, use of personal protective equipment, work practices by which the employee can minimize risks, safe use of engineering controls and equipment, and the medical surveillance requirements. Must be repeated annually.

Topics include: The effects of noise on hearing; the purpose of hearing protectors, the advantages, and attenuation of various types and instructions on selection, fitting, use and care; the purpose of audiometric testing, and an explanation of the test procedures. Applies to employees who are exposed to noise at or above an 8 hr. TWA of 85 dBa. Must be taken annually.

The purpose of this course is to give individuals the knowledge to recognize and care for signs of Heat Illnesses. Anyone whose job requires them to work outdoors in heat is required to attend this course. Valid for one year.

Anyone who welds or does Hot Work must have training in the General Industry Safety Orders and National Fire Prevention Association’s fire prevention and suppression procedures for Hot Work and Welding. Valid for the life of employment with the University.

The Injury and Illness Prevention Training course is designed to ensure employees comply with safe and healthy work practices. The course includes information regarding; individual responsibilities, discipline and recognition, information exchange, inspections and incident investigations, safety training, and safety committees. All employees are required to complete this training within one year of hire.

This training covers the location and availability of the Chemical Hygiene Plan, exposure limits to certain substances, signs and symptoms associated with exposures, and the location of known reference material on the hazards, safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals found in the laboratory setting. Anyone who works with or has the potential to be exposed to hazardous chemicals in the lab setting should attend this training and renew it annually.

Presents information on selecting, storing, inspecting, and using ladders.

Lasers have several hazards associated with them and this training shall cover; safety and health hazards present on site, use of personal protective equipment, work practices by which the employee can minimize risks, safe use of engineering controls and equipment, and the medical surveillance requirements. Anyone on campus that installs, adjusts, or operates laser equipment should take this training prior to operating a laser.

Lockout / Tagout training includes hazardous energy control procedures and the hazards related to performing activities required for cleaning, repairing, servicing setting-up, and adjusting prime movers and equipment. All employees who job requires them to operate or use a machine on which cleaning, repairing, servicing, setting-up, or adjusting operations are being performed under lockout or tagout.

A practical approach to match people and the tools and equipment they use, the work processes, and the work environment to decrease injuries, improve efficiency of work, and increase overall physical well-being. This course is designed for employees who work in an office setting. Useful exercises and workstation design are included. Valid for the life of employment with the University.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is needed for many work procedures on campus. Some examples of commonly used PPE are respirators, ear plugs, earmuffs, leather gloves, nitrile-coated gloves, safety glasses, chemical splash goggles, Tyvek suits, and dust masks. This will include how to select proper safety equipment, what is proper PPE’s for the job and how to store, clean and maintain such equipment. For employees that may be exposed to hazards on the job. Valid for the life of employment with the University.

Employees that utilize tools that are designed to only drive fasteners that use a trigger, work piece contact and/or other operating control to actuate the tool. This includes “bump fire” and sequential modes. Training shall include, the code of safe practices for pneumatically-driven nailers or staplers, the hazards related to each mode of actuation, and hands on training to verify that the operator understands the operating and safety instructions. Employees must be trained prior to using these types of equipment.

Employees will be trained in operating instructions, warnings, and precautions by type, truck controls, steering and maneuvering, stability, capacity, and fueling or charging. Employees will also be instructed in driver awareness and other unique or potentially hazardous conditions in the workplace that could affect safe operation of the trucks. Validity Period is annually then once every three years.

Respirators protect workers from inhaling particulate matter, toxic gases and fumes they may encounter on the job. When effective engineering controls are not feasible appropriate respirators must be used. This course will cover why the respirator is necessary; what the limitations and capabilities of the respirator are; How to use the respirator effectively in emergency situations; how to inspect the respirator; what the procedures are for maintenance and storage; and how to recognize medical signs and symptoms that may limit or prevent the effective use of respirators. Must be taken annually and includes FIT Testing.

Scaffolds can be a hazardous work environment if not carefully trained. This training includes: electrical hazards, falls, and falling objects protection, proper materials handling while on a scaffold, and the maximum intended load and the load-carrying capacities of the scaffolds used. Training is required initially before use of scaffolds.

The training shall cover demounting of tires, inspection and identification of the rim wheel components, mounting of tires, inflation, and installation and removal of rim wheels from the vehicle. Employees that are responsible for the servicing of single, split, multi-piece rims or wheels used on vehicles such as forklifts, industrial tractors, trailers, busses, and off-road machines must complete this training annually.

The purpose of this course is to give individuals in the workplace an introduction to the knowledge necessary to identify and reduce the risks of slip, trips, and falls.

This two-part course consists of a 15-minute online course providing individuals with the proper and safe driving practices of small vehicles. An In-Person Practical Exercise is also required before being cleared to drive a small vehicle on campus. This course is valid for four years and must be taken in conjunction with Defensive Driving.

This training covers the supervisor’s role in the safety aspects of those they supervise. Topics include: The Injury and Illness Prevention Plan, hazard inspections, hazardous waste collection, workplace violence, ergonomic assessments, emergency procedures, and the Heat Illness Prevention Policy and Small Vehicle Safety plan.

Tree trimmers will learn the hazards involved in their job assignments, including the proper use of all equipment utilized in tree work, maintenance and removal operations, and in the identification and preventative measures relating to common poisonous plants and harmful animals. Must be renewed annually.

Learn what violence and threats of violence are, learn the danger signs, what are your supervisor’s responsibilities, what can be done to intervene in the office setting, and above all else, learn when to seek assistance or report concerns. Participants will also get some ideas for developing an Action Plan Checklist, and tips for preventing workplace violence.
