Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble presents standard works as well as newly commissioned pieces and has gained wide recognition for diverse and creative programming.  The ensemble has been featured at the California Music Educators’ Association conferences, the College Band Directors’ National Association conferences, as well as other national and international venues.

Symphony Orchestra

The Stanislaus Symphony Orchestra, led by Music Director Dustin Soiseth, performs a broad, eclectic range of repertoire for both chamber and full orchestra.

Musicians who perform with the SSO can expect a relaxed and supportive atmosphere in which innovative rehearsal techniques, sectionals with CSUS faculty, and even one-one-one coaching sessions are part of a rehearsal process designed to both challenge and enrich.  Players are held to high standards of musicianship and personal responsibility intended to prepare them for careers as professional musicians and educators.  The SSO is open by audition to all music students, non-majors, and community members, and rehearses Monday nights from 7-9:30 p.m.

Jazz Ensemble and Combos

The Jazz Ensemble has developed a reputation for excellence, consistently playing to standing-room-only audiences.  The Ensemble performs in competitions, such as the Hayward Jazz festival and Reno Jazz festival, and for various university and community events. Combos perform in concerts throughout the community, and are available for special engagements.

Symphony Band

The Symphony Band is designed to provide opportunities for music education applications.  Music majors may perform on primary or secondary instruments and gain practical conducting experience.  The ensemble is open to music majors, non music majors, and community members.

Percussion Ensemble

The Percussion Ensemble performs concerts in the fall and spring semesters.  The group performs the concert percussion repertoire and has premiered several compositions by University students and faculty composers.  The ensemble has performed throughout the central part of the state, at festivals, and at other universities.

New Music Ensemble

The New Music Ensemble is a versatile group devoted to the performance of new, hot-from-the-printer concert music, with an emphasis on the works of CSUS composition students.  Made up of composers and instrumentalists from the Department of Music, the NME is first and foremost a lab ensemble where student composers can try out new ideas, interact with and receive feedback from the faculty and instrumentalists performing their works, and hear their compositions take shape as they compose them.  Each semester culminates in a performance of pieces ‘workshopped’ throughout the term.  The NME also performs the works of prominent living composers.  Created in 2007, the NME has given six world premieres to date.

Additionally, the NME presents concerts that aim to expand the boundaries of the concert experience by exploring innovative concert formats and performing in non-traditional venues.  The NME is open to all music students.

Instrumental Chamber Ensembles

Chamber music studies in woodwind, brass, strings, keyboard, and guitar are available in the fall and spring semesters.  These ad hoc ensembles present a joint public recital each semester.
