"I studied the
lives of great men and famous women; and I found that the men and women who
got to the top were those who did the jobs they had in hand, with everything
they had of energy, enthusiasm, and hard work." - Harry S. Truman |
3 Exams (@ 100 points each = 300 points total)
Exams will be 80 points multiple choice (40 questions @ 2 points each, equally
distributed across the chapters) and 20 points essay taken from the attached
Exams 1-3 Essay Questions page. Bring a scantron
to each exam - any version. You can have one 8½ x 11 page (front and
back, any font size) of notes per exam. You are invited to write notes to
me on the exam by starring the item on the scantron
and then writing your note next to the question in the exam itself.
Depending on the quality of your note (i.e., tell me what you know about the
question), you may receive full, partial, or no credit. Exams will be
curved positively if necessary. If you need to miss an exam, speak with
me about it before the exam. Makeup exams may be difficult and
essay. The successful completion of this assignment will meet learning
objectives LO1 and LO4.
One Case Presentation with Outline and
PowerPoint Slides (100 points)
Here are some of the basics: teams of 3-4 individuals per case, reserve
your case on the sign-up sheet, do not pick a company that you have used in
another class or in this class, accompanied with a detailed typed outline due
the beginning of class on the day the oral presentation is given, and approximately
7 pages of typed outline content. Content pages consist of the
body of the paper, not the title page, table of contents, appendix, or
references (but make sure that you include these as well). By the way,
answers.com is a great reference as well as Hoover's. You may want to use
the attached Case Analysis Format as a guide for how to format a typical
case. In any case, make sure that you report in detail on the company’s
target market(s) and its 4 p’s. At
least 3 full pages of your outline should be devoted to the solution and
implementation. Your outline should be accompanied with a title
page, table of contents, list of 10-12 references, and an appendix which at a
minimum includes copies of the PowerPoint slides (6 slides per page, left to
right as we read, and print in “only black and white”). Make sure that
the PPT includes a title slide, agenda slide, introduction slide, background
slides as appropriate, 2-4 SWOT slides, 1-2 problem slides, alternative
evaluation slide overall with separate slides of each alternative and
pros/cons, two solution slides, 3-4 implementation slides, 1-2 update slides,
conclusion slide, references, and questions/thank you for attending
slide. Hand in two copies of the entire outline and PPT slides -- one copy
will be returned with notes and Dr. Williams will keep the other. Please
give two copies of both the outline and the PPT slides to Dr. Williams at the
beginning of your presentation. The outline and presentation should be
professional quality, i.e., dress like a job interview, set your stage,
practice, and "package" yourself and your ideas well. About 45
minutes of class time (or 10-15 minutes per individual) will be allotted to
each case. I will ask at the beginning of class how much time you
need. You need to know this accurately. Also, you may not have time
to cover everything that you include in Dr. Williams' outline, i.e., the oral
presentation may be an abbreviated version of the outline for Dr.
Williams. The final written product is due the day you give the oral
presentation. The grades for teamwork will be adjusted by a confidential
peer evaluation from each team member. Hand in peer evaluations by the
next class period as the grade will not be returned until the peer evaluations
are received. Please see the attached Confidential Peer Evaluation
Form. Each case will be critiqued by the class and the professor.
Please see the attached Case Analysis Format and Oral Presentation Guidelines
handout and the Presentation Comment Format Sheet. Case examples from
previous classes will be available for you to see. The successful
completion of this assignment will meet learning objectives LO1, LO2b, LO3, and
LO4.

generous qualities, progressive ideas." - Dostoevsky |
5 Internet Exercises (160 points total)
You
will be doing five Internet Exercises during the semester. Internet Exercises 1-3 will be done as a
group. Internet Exercises 4-5 will be
done individually. The first Internet
Exercise is worth 20 points, Internet Exercises 2-5 are worth 35 points
each. The dates, assignment requirements,
and when the assignments are due are listed in the schedule. Each team member will participate in each
Internet Exercise. For Internet
Exercises 2-5, you will be working on your own either in your groups (Internet
Exercises 2-3) or individually (Internet Exercises 4-5), i.e., no formal class
meeting on those four days. However, I will be in my office and available
online if you need to interact with me.
The successful completion of this assignment will meet learning
objectives LO1, LO2a, and LO3.
Blog Participation (3 blogs @ 5 points
each = 15 points total)
As
an individual, you will be blogging on three Blackboard discussion boards. You will need to post once on each of the
three discussion boards and respond to two other posts per discussion board
(for a total of 9 entries). All blogs
are posted on Blackboard. The last day
of class you will hand in three separate papers wherein you have cut and pasted
your blogs and the posts to which you are responding. The successful completion of this assignment
will meet learning objectives LO1 and LO3.
Volunteer Nonprofit Activity & Journal (optional - up to 15
points extra credit)
The volunteer nonprofit activity must be done during this semester only.
You must write a journal of your time, activity, assessment of learning, and
contemplation of the overall experience of working with a nonprofit
organization. The journal is due the end of the semester. The
successful completion of this assignment will meet learning objectives LO1 and
LO4.
Class Attendance and Participation (25 points)
Class attendance will contribute to meeting each of the learning
objectives. Students will not be added to the roll after it has been collected/finished.

during student presentations. During any
other time in class, make sure that you do not disturb others in class or pull
attention from class activities and learning, e.g., loud clicking due to haste
and/or fake fingernails, sounds, screens that are too entertaining and
attention grabbing for those sitting around you, and so forth.
Taping Policy
Audio or video recording (or any other form
of recording) of classes is not permitted unless expressly allowed by the
faculty member as indicated in the course syllabus or as a special
accommodation for students who are currently registered with the Disability
Resource Services Program and are approved for this accommodation. Recordings allowed as special accommodations
are for the personal use of the DRS-approved student, and may only be
distributed to other persons who have been approved by the DRS program. Faculty may require the student sign an
Audio/Video Recording Agreement, which they may keep for their records.
