2009 EL Young Writers Academies
The academies were taught by GVWP Teacher Consultants, who developed a curriculum emphasizing highly motivating writing activities and literary texts utilizing best practices in EL writing and literacy instruction.
The writing below are just a couple of examples from this year's academies that were published in a student anthology.
Stone
by Juliana Trejo
Ridges stand below my finger tips
Craters in an insignificant word, withered away into a pale gray collection of minerals.
It could be much more than that
Delicate desert spring is covered by stones with many imperfections
The final mark guarding life
Another stone atop sand, smooth from water washing over
Lining and bordering peace and experience
Like any other inanimate object putting your mind to thought only if given a moment of value
Family History
by Jorge Rubio
I found a picture frame. I opened it and a picture fell out and it was of my mom as a really young woman. My mom said the day the picture was taken she went to buy chillies and tortillas to make a Mexican dish named Chilaquiles. She bumped into a man named Jose Manuel Rubio and she dropped her stuff. He helped her pick them up. They got married in 1997 and remarried in 2008 by the church. In 1996 my brother, Sergio, was born and in 1999 I was born. Seven years later my little sister is born. This picture of my mom is important to me because it shows how my family started.
