Ethnic Studies Major and Minor Advising Requriements

ETHNIC STUDIES MINOR: (15 units)

  • ETHS 2050- Introduction to Ethnic Studies (3 units)
  • 6 units of core courses (as listed below)
  • 6 units of electives (only classes within Ethnic Studies)

ETHNIC STUDIES MAJOR: (30 units)

Prerequisites: 6 units

  • ETHS 2050 - Introduction to Ethnic Studies, 3 units            

Choose ONE of the following:

  • ETHS 2000 - The African American Experience (3 units)                                       
  • ETHS 2100 - The Chicana/o-Latina/o Experience, 3 units                                                   
  • ETHS 2200 - The Asian American Experience, 3 units   

 Core Courses: 6 units

Choose TWO of the following courses:

  • ETHS 4200 - The Minority Experience, 3 units                                                                   
  • ETHS 4350 - Multiculturalism: Bias to Reality, 3 units                                                       
  • ETHS 4360 - Struggle in Black and Brown: Relational Ethnic Studies, 3 units                              
  • ETHS/SOCL 4430 - Contemporary U.S. Immigration, 3 units    

Methodology: 3 units

Choose ONE of the following:

  • SOCL 3030 - Research Methods, 4 units                                                                              
  • SSCI 3010   - Introduction to the Social Science Methodology, 3 units                                           
  • ANTH 4040 - Crossing Cultural Boundaries: The Field Work Process, 4 units                  
  • GEND 3000 – Contemporary Gender Studies Research, 3 units

Electives to complete the major: 15 units
Choose a minimum of 12 units in Ethnic Studies courses. 3 units may be from outside the discipline.
