Dr. John Wittman earned his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale in Rhetoric and Composition and minored in Cultural Studies and Critical Theory. He received his M.A. from California State University, Fresno in Composition and Rhetoric and his B.A in English Literature also from Fresno. His primary interests include basic writing, literacy studies, assessment, critical theory, and research methods.

Dr. Wittman’s current research focuses on issues related to assessment and student participation. He has completed several research projects incorporating students directly into high-stakes assessment. In this research he has worked with students at all levels of education—from basic writers to graduate students. This research is driven by his philosophy that all stakeholders should have the opportunity to directly and actively impact outcomes based assessment. Dr. Wittman is also interested in the literacy development of basic writing students and their matriculation on college campuses. 

At the graduate level, Dr. Wittman currently teaches assessment, the politics of pedagogy, academic capitalism, and issues in literacy and basic writing. He also teaches writing courses at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and English capstone courses.
