The Certificate of Language and Cultural Competence We will use a portfolio assessment modeled on the MA program at Monterey Institute of International Studies (i.e., the contents of the portfolio are specified in precise detail). Possibly offer a 2-3 unit Individual Study during last semester for the purpose of compiling the portfolio. The portfolio should be reviewed and assessed by at least two faculty members. The portfolio will demonstrate the following. 1. Competency in a foreign language: demonstration of language proficiency 2. Factual knowledge about the culture in which the language is spoken 3. An immersion living/working experience in the culture in which the foreign language is spoken, either outside the country or in a nearby "heritage community". 4. Understanding of the global issues relevant to the academic major.
