Provost Update on Budget July 14, 2009
We all know that we face a minimum reduction in our budget of at least $5 million, assuming all unions approve the furloughs. As we wait for further news, we are using the hiatus to consult and discuss with the Deans and their departments as well as faculty, students, and staff groups and individuals. As information unfolds, we are proceeding with planning for various cut scenarios, currently ranging from $5 million to $8 million.
Key steps in this process have involved discussions with the Deans and their colleges. We met first with the Deans as a group to identify important ideas and criteria for shaping reductions. We held individual College meetings both last week and this week, to assist Departments in developing their proposals. The University Budget Advisory Committee met on Monday and reviewed various documents relating to reductions. On July 15, the Deans will present their proposals for review and comment. Options will be identified that the University will include in its subsequent proposal to the Chancellor. On Friday, July 17, UBAC will meet to discuss the planning effort.
Various election processes are underway and these are likely to affect our planning.
We encourage you to share your thoughts with us and we value your advice and comments.
