Provost Update on Budget July 13, 2009Dear Colleagues,
We have been through a considerable period of waiting as information has trickled in regarding legislation, gubernatorial activity, actions from the Chancellor and other campus concerns. Also, because contract talks have been underway simultaneously, the University could not undertake actions or analyses that might interfere with negotiations or affect electoral outcomes.
As the President’s recent email stated, what we do know is that the CSU reduction is currently $584 million and the University’s share of that amount is 2.2 percent. The Chancellor is meeting with the presidents today to provide some direction prior to the meeting of the CSU Board of Trustees next Tuesday.
In our efforts to undertake the campus dialogue necessary to identify reductions in cost that will enable us to act responsibly in this endeavor, we must act broadly and review all programs. Reductions are likely to come in a variety of ways as these discussions continue to evolve and it will be a painful process for everyone. It will require that majors, programs, departments, colleges, and administrative and other support costs be carefully scrutinized.
Let there be no doubt about the seriousness of the situation. Cuts will come. I urge us all to act constructively in these turbulent times and to continue focusing our energies on maintaining quality while making the changes required of us all.
I am confident that the University will act with civility and respect for one another as we move forward.
Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
