Biotechnology is the application of technology to biological systems and living organisms. It generally refers to the techniques, tools, and procedures for modifying living organisms for human purposes in engineering, agriculture, science, technology, and medicine.

Programs currently offered

B.A in Agricultural Studies

The Agricultural Studies program at CSU Stanislaus grounds students in the economic principles of, among other things, agricultural and environmental resource management; physical, chemical, and biological principles of agroecosystems; global perspectives on food issues; and restorative and sustainable agricultural practices. The program encourages students to critically assess agricultural issues and trends, and delivers a high quality academic program that prepares students for emerging professional opportunities.

B.S. in Biological Sciences, with an available concentration in Genetics and Biotechnology, Clinical Laboratory Science, and many more.

There is a clear movement within the Department of Biological Sciences at CSU Stanislaus to provide further opportunities for students to focus on the study and advancement of biotechnology. This was recently made evident with the inclusion of a biotech component within the freshmen sequence of classes. As a result, students have a chance to delve into a biotechnology-specific laboratory during their first year, rather than having to wait several years before being exposed to the hands-on, laboratory aspect of biotechnology. Many students are pre-doctoral, following the University’s Pre-Health Professional Guidelines. A number of these students are using biotechnology long before entering the pharmacy field.

B.S. in Chemistry, with an available concentration in Environmental Sciences

The University’s B.S. in Chemistry degree program is accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and provides comprehensive, hands-on training in chemistry for students wishing to become professional chemists in industry or government, or who plan to attend graduate school.

M.S. in Genetic Counseling

A Master of Science in Genetic Counseling is offered for students interested in pursuing a career in health care services that combines medical genetics knowledge and counseling skills.  Career opportunities are diverse and include positions in university medical centers, health maintenance organizations, private medical clinics, public health care clinics, biopharmaceutical companies, diagnostic laboratories, and biotechnology companies.

M.S. in Ecology and Sustainability, with available concentrations in Ecological Conservation and Ecological Economics

The Ecology and Sustainability program at CSU Stanislaus aims to give students the skills they need to enter doctoral programs, in the hopes of tackling many of the problems facing the environment today and in the future. The need is great in the Central Valley for educated scientists in areas such as environmental impact assessment, ecological informatics, ecotourism, restoration ecology, risk assessment, ecological economics, and conservation biology. With employment in these areas of specialty expected to be in high demand, CSU Stanislaus is leading the way in the training of the Valley’s future sustainability leaders.
