CSU Stanislaus Social Awareness

The Social Awareness Programs

The Social Awareness Program offers CSU Stanislaus students information on social issues and gives students the ability to stop social injustices and make a difference in our community.

The Social Awareness Committee, within the University Student Union Program Board, strives to improve the quality of student life here on campus. We plan and execute events that are fun and educational for all students here at CSU Stanislaus. Whether it is a guest speaker, a silent, or a fun filled day dedicated to stopping social injustices, we are here to make sure the students have a blast! We also seek out community involvement with the campus by planning events benefiting our surrounding community. We love to see our community getting involved with our campus and making a difference for our students.

Lookism in the Classroom - "A Strive to end discrimination within our classroom atmospheres."
Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

When inside a classroom, do you ever feel like you are being discriminated against just by where you are sitting? Why is it that only athletes sit with athletes, Greeks sit with Greeks, and the shy student sits alone? Break the cycle and sit with someone who you do not normally sit next to and come to the quad and let us know for a chance to win prizes.

March

LGBT Awareness Week
March 12th-16th

"Doing Gender Diversity"
Tuesday, March 13th

Transgender Awareness! Come out to the quad from 10-1 PM to participate in the events for the day. We will also ask students who want to participate in the event to dress up in a certain manner and act a certain way in order to see how uncomfortable they feel. Those who are transgender individuals feel opposite of the sex they were born with. The purpose is to get students to better understand why people are transgender and how they feel stepping out of their comfort zones.

"Have a Gay Day!"
Wednesday, March 14th

Come out to the quad from 10-1 PM to participate in the events of the day. We will be passing out information, rainbow flags, and play a game for a drawing. We will also be making post secret type of cards where students can write if they are gay, lesbian, know of someone who is gay, and how they feel about the gay/lesbian community. This can give students a chance to express their views on the issue of gay tolerance as well as gay marriage. We want to see how tolerant our campus is of lesbian and gay individuals as well as pushing the limit in order to teach students about tolerance. We will be putting together a collage of these cards and exhibiting them during the drag show and pride parade on Friday.

Anxiety and Depression Workshop
Thursday, March 15th

Say good-bye to anxiety and depression - Check out the ASI Recreation and Wellness website to get more information.

Pride Parade and Carnival Cabaret Drag Show
Friday, March 16th

The overall slogan of the event is, "Are you afraid of the Dark? Try Living in the Closet." That will be the emphasis of the parade, not only for those of the LGBT community but we want people to be themselves and have pride in who they are as individuals. The purpose of the pride parade is for everyone to show pride in who they are. The parade will be from 12-2 PM. Along with the parade, we will also have a student drag show competition. For more information please contact the Social Awareness Coordinator at (209) 664-6510. We will host our annual Carnival Cabaret Drag Show at 7 PM in the Event Center where students can come and enjoy a fun-filled and educational night!

Random Acts of Kindness Week
March 21st-23rd

Come out and celebrate each of these days as we come out with random acts of kindness for the university. Will we be in the quad? Will we be in main dining or the Warrior Grill? Who knows? But a random act of kindness is in the making!

Campus Dialogue: "Genderize It!"
Wednesday, March 28th

This hot topic issue will cover the role males and females are "supposed" to play in society. Can women ever escape their gender roles? Are men always supposed to be manly? Come out to the Carol Burke Student Lounge at 6:30 PM and find out.

April

Stop the Hate Week

Tuesday, April 24th

A program adopted from the national program Challenge Day. We facilitate a program designed to increase personal power and self-esteem, to shift dangerous peer pressure to positive peer support and to eliminate the acceptance of teasing, violence and all forms of oppression. This will be in the Event Center starting at 6 PM.
