Nolen Preece’s “Simple Systems” investigates the overlapping areas between conceptual, minimal and fine art photography. Photogram as a method of working, delivers a “photomonotype,” more closely aligned with painting or printmaking. Preece uses the simplest of objects, such as paper and glass to maintain a minimal gesture. His work is spontaneous and he is not caught up in perfection. The media itself requires working in total darkness, therefore a random way of working is the norm. This is a new approach to working for Preece. His past work has been loaded with meaning and fairly complex. In trying to break from being overly saturated, Preece’s “Simple Systems” is indeed a liberating experience.
