Candidates may apply for admission to the Preliminary Level I Credential Program as an undergraduate or postbaccalaureate student. Whenever possible students are encouraged to combine courses of study in order to have units count toward degree and credential objectives.

Five years from the issuance of the Preliminary Level I credential, special educators must complete: (a) a Professional Level II Education Specialist Credential Program and (b) EDIT 4170 Education Technology Foundations (2 units) and HLTH 4120 Secondary School Health and Safety or HLTH 4200 Elementary School Health and Safety.

1.1 CSU Stanislaus Undergraduate Students

Undergraduates interested in pursuing a Special Education teaching credential are encouraged to pursue the Liberal Studies major with a concentration in Exceptional Children & Youth. The Liberal Studies concentration and degree minor in Exceptional Children and Youth were developed primarily for students interested in a career in special education. However, all undergraduates may find the courses valuable in the understanding of exceptionalities.

Students who select the concentration may choose to complete an academic degree and a credential preparation program concurrently. A student can complete the Liberal Studies major, concentration in Exceptional Children and Youth, and the Special Education Credential Program in a little more than four years. However, to do so requires careful planning and frequent advising is recommended.

A total of 124 units are required for the Baccalaureate degree in Liberal Studies, concentration Exceptional Children and Youth. Choosing a Liberal Studies Major with a concentration in Exceptional Children and Youth allows a student to complete a majority of the requirements for the Special Education credential at the undergraduate level. The concentration includes 21 units, 18 of which are upper division. See Appendix A (Download PDF file titled: Special Education Preliminary Level I Handbook & Application.PDF PDF Icon) for the program requirements for the Proposed Blended Program and the Special Education Credential Program.

Special education courses taken more than 10 years from the date of application to the Special Education Credential Programs must be petitioned so it can be determined if they meet current credential program requirements.
